Description
The Hautes-Côtes de Beaune are the cooler hills behind the Côte de Beaune. This Chardonnay comes from 40-year-old, south-east-facing vines in Derrière Baubigny, below the village of Orches. The soil is limestone rich in mica, with fossils. The mica gives the palate weight, and the alkaline soil keeps the wine tense, with plenty of acidity.
The wine ferments with native yeasts in a large oak foudre and several large, old barrels. It ages 12 months on its coarse lees and is bottled unfined and lightly filtered. 9 barrels were made. The result is fresh, pure, and lively.
The same hills make the red in Aux Grandes Raies.
Andrew and Emma Nielsen founded Le Grappin in 2011. They source from the same organically farmed single parcels every year, work without additions, and bottle everything by hand. Named one of The 10 Best Unsung Burgundy Producers by Wine-Searcher.
