About Hélène Charbaut

Hélène Charbaut is the fourth generation of a family farming in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ since 1937. The cave where she makes her wines was built in the 1800s — a historic chalk cellar that served as a classroom for the village children during the German occupation of the Second World War. It has been in the Charbaut family since 1937 and is where Hélène has worked since returning home after studying viticulture and gaining experience at other Champagne houses.

Her approach is built around a single principle: one grape variety, one expression of terroir, one cuvée. Five wines — La Charbauterie, La Crayère Blanc de Blancs, Les Pinailleuses Blanc de Noirs, La Meunière Blanc de Meunier, and La Pirouette Blanc de Noirs — each a precise and specific expression of the Premier Cru vineyards she farms in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Bisseuil.

The farming is regenerative — cover crops between vine rows, sheep grazing in the vineyards, a move toward biodynamic practices that reflects the same philosophy as the winemaking: minimal intervention, maximum expression of place.

Hélène is the kind of producer who is simultaneously deeply rooted in tradition — four generations of the same family in the same cave — and entirely her own. The wines reflect both.

The cuvées

La Charbauterie — Premier Cru

Average vine age 52 years. The multi-terroir blend — the one wine that brings all three villages together. Pinot Noir dominant. The natural starting point into the range.

La Crayère — Premier Cru Blanc de Blancs

100% Chardonnay, planted 1963 from La Crayère in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. The most mineral and precise wine in the range — the chalk in the name is the chalk in the glass.

Les Pinailleuses — Premier Cru Blanc de Noirs

100% Pinot Noir, average vine age 47 years. The structured, age-worthy wine in the range.

La Meunière — Premier Cru Blanc de Meunier

100% Meunier, planted 1999 from Le Chaudion in Bisseuil. The most aromatic and distinctive cuvée — pure Meunier from a single Premier Cru plot is rare in Champagne.

La Pirouette — Premier Cru Blanc de Noirs

100% Pinot Noir, planted 1960. A second single-variety Pinot Noir expression — different terroir from Les Pinailleuses, different character.
