Description
The wine
Aloxe-Corton sits at the meeting point of the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune — the northernmost village of the Côte de Beaune, at the base of the Corton hill. The hill itself is the only Grand Cru on the Côte de Beaune producing serious red wine — Corton Grand Cru, divided among dozens of producers and covering multiple lieu-dits across the steep upper slope. The village wines from Aloxe-Corton are made from Pinot Noir grown on the lower slopes and the flatter land below the Grand Cru — sharing the same iron-rich limestone soils and the same fundamental character, at a village classification and price.
The character of Aloxe-Corton red is distinct from the softer, more elegant Côte de Beaune styles to the south. The iron-rich soils give the wines more structure and grip than Pommard or Beaune — closer in feel to the more powerful Côte de Nuits styles, with a mineral tension that reflects the Corton terroir. At the village level from a serious producer, Aloxe-Corton offers some of the most interesting value on the Côte de Beaune.
Yann Charlopin applies the same approach he brings to every wine in the range: organic farming, hand-harvested, fully destemmed, cold maceration before fermentation with native yeasts, slow ageing on fine lees, no filtration. The distinctive wax capsule applied by hand.
Tasting notes
Deep ruby. Red cherry, blackcurrant, a hint of iron and mineral earthiness on the nose — the characteristic signature of the Corton soils. The palate is more structured and firm than the other Charlopin-Tissier village wines — more tannin, more grip, more age-worthiness. Good concentration, fine-grained tannins, and a long mineral finish. A wine that benefits from decanting and rewards patience. Drink now through 2032.
Service: 16°C. Beef in sauce, roast lamb, duck confit, game birds, aged hard cheeses.
2022 vintage note
2022 was a warm, generous vintage across the Côte de Beaune — excellent growing conditions producing wines of exceptional fruit clarity and smooth tannin structure. For a structured, iron-rich village like Aloxe-Corton, the vintage adds concentration and fruit weight without sacrificing the mineral grip that makes this appellation distinctive. More immediately approachable than most Aloxe-Corton at this level but with the structure to develop for eight to ten years.
Yann Charlopin founded Domaine Charlopin-Tissier in 2013 — son of Philippe Charlopin, mentored by Jean-Marie Fourrier. Organic farming, fully destemmed, cold maceration, no filtration. The wines appear on the lists of The French Laundry, Quince, SingleThread, and Les 110 de Taillevent in Paris.
