Natural wine is one of the most debated terms in the wine world — and one of the least regulated. There is no exact definition. For some producers and buyers it means wines made without any additions or interventions: no commercial yeasts, no fining agents, no filtration, minimal or no sulphur. For others the term has become associated with a particular aesthetic — cloudy, volatile, funky — that has little to do with the original philosophy.

The producers on the Amitié list don’t generally use the term to describe themselves. What they share is a set of practices that overlap significantly with what the natural wine movement values: organic and biodynamic farming, indigenous yeast fermentation, no fining, minimal or no filtration, low or no sulphur additions, and a fundamental commitment to letting the terroir speak without manipulation.

Whether that makes them natural wine producers is a question of definition. What it makes them is consistent, thoughtful, and worth paying attention to — whatever category you put them in.

Meet the winemakers
