Yann Charlopin and Justine Tissier founded Domaine Charlopin-Tissier in 2013 — bringing together her family’s Marsannay vineyard holdings with his own parcels and a shared vision for what the wines should be.
Yann grew up in his father Philippe Charlopin’s cellar — Philippe a student of Henri Jayer, the most influential winemaker of post-war Burgundy. Before founding the domaine, Yann worked in Tasmania, Sancerre, and Chablis before returning to Burgundy to work alongside his father, then sought out Jean-Marie Fourrier as a second mentor. Two of the Côte de Nuits’ most demanding teachers. The influence shows across the entire range.
The philosophy is clear and consistent: organic farming throughout, hand-harvested and fully destemmed, cold maceration before fermentation with native yeasts, slow ageing on fine lees, bottled without filtration. No heavy oak, no manipulation. Each vineyard given space to say what it has to say.
The distinctive wax capsule — applied by hand to every bottle — is the visual signature of the domaine. It appears on every wine from the $60 Bourgogne Montre-Cul to the $900 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru magnum.
The wines on the Amitié list span the full range of what Charlopin-Tissier makes — from the entry-level Bourgogne and Côtes de Nuits-Villages through the Marsannay village wine and three Marsannay lieux-dits (La Montagne, Le Chapitre, and the magnums of Clos du Roy and Le Chapitre) to Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses Rouge, and the Premier Cru Sous Frétille Blanc. At the top: the 2020 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru in magnum — one bottle remaining.
Marsannay — the appellation Justine’s family has farmed for generations — is the heart of the range. Three of the village’s most celebrated lieux-dits are being considered for Premier Cru classification: La Montagne, Le Chapitre, and Clos du Roy. Yann farms all three. At current prices these are among the most compelling value propositions on the Amitié list.
The wines appear on the lists of Verjus, The French Laundry and The Morris — three of the most rigorous wine programs in California. Production is small. Some cuvées sell out quickly.
