Description

The wine

The Côte de Nuits is bookended by two broader appellations — Marsannay at the northern end, Côtes de Nuits-Villages at both ends. The villages that fall under the Côtes de Nuits-Villages appellation — Brochon and Fixin in the north, Corgoloin and Comblanchien in the south — sit where the famous slope begins to widen and flatten and the limestone soils become shallower and stonier. The wines produced here have a particular stony, precise quality that distinguishes them from the richer, deeper Côte de Nuits village wines.

Yann Charlopin sources from Brochon — the northernmost commune of the Côtes de Nuits-Villages appellation, sitting directly above Gevrey-Chambertin on the same limestone ridge. The proximity to Gevrey shows in the wine’s character — more structure and mineral tension than a generic Bourgogne Rouge, with the Côte de Nuits earthiness and grip that the village below is celebrated for.

The approach is the same as across the entire range: organic farming, hand-harvested, fully destemmed, cold maceration before fermentation with native yeasts, slow ageing on fine lees, no filtration.

Tasting notes

Bright ruby. Red cherry, raspberry, a hint of mineral earthiness and dried herbs on the nose — the stony limestone character of Brochon coming through clearly. The palate is fresh and precise with fine-grained tannins and a clean, mineral finish. Lighter in body than the Marsannay wines but with real Côte de Nuits character. Approachable now and best enjoyed young. Drink now through 2028.

Service: 16°C. Charcuterie, roast chicken, mushroom dishes, soft cheeses. A natural bistro red.

2022 vintage note

2022 was a warm, generous vintage across the Côte de Nuits — excellent growing conditions producing wines of good concentration and depth. For the shallower, stonier soils of Brochon, the vintage adds fruit weight and warmth without sacrificing the mineral freshness that defines this appellation. Approachable from release and best drunk within the next four to five years.

Yann Charlopin founded Domaine Charlopin-Tissier in 2013 — son of Philippe Charlopin, mentored by Jean-Marie Fourrier. Organic farming, fully destemmed, cold maceration, no filtration. The wines appear on the lists of The French Laundry, Quince, SingleThread, and Les 110 de Taillevent in Paris.
