Description

Marsannay sits at the very northern tip of the Côte de Nuits and it remains one of the best-kept secrets in Burgundy for anyone seeking village-level quality at a fraction of the price of Gevrey-Chambertin or Vosne-Romanée. This village rouge is the perfect introduction to what Charlopin-Tissier does, and it delivers far more than its appellation suggests.

Organically farmed, hand-harvested, and fully destemmed, the grapes undergo a cold maceration before spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts — a process designed to preserve freshness and fruit purity. The wine then ages slowly on fine lees before bottling without filtration. In the glass, it’s bright ruby with a nose of fresh cherries, raspberry, violets, and a whisper of spice. The palate is silky and transparent, with that cool, precise acidity that is the defining signature of the northern Côte de Nuits. This is Burgundy at its most joyful and honest — drink it now or hold it for five to seven years to watch it develop real complexity.

About Domain Charlopin-Tissier

Founded in 2013 by Yann Charlopin and his wife Justine Tissier, Domaine Charlopin-Tissier is one of the most exciting young domaines in Burgundy — a small, organically farmed estate rooted in Gevrey-Chambertin, producing wines of striking purity, precision, and terroir expression that have already earned a place on some of the world’s greatest restaurant lists.

There are very few domaines in Burgundy where the combination of pedigree, philosophy, and raw talent converge so compellingly in such a short period of time. Yann Charlopin established Domaine Charlopin-Tissier in 2013, building his range around the Marsannay vineyards of his wife Justine’s family. It was a modest beginning, but the foundation was anything but ordinary.

Yann grew up watching his father Philippe Charlopin — himself a student of the legendary Henri Jayer — define a generation of Côte de Nuits winemaking. When the time came to strike out on his own, Yann sought out another of Burgundy’s great mentors, Jean-Marie Fourrier, whose influence is visible in every bottle Charlopin-Tissier produces. The style here is marked by a commitment to transparency and terroir: all farming is organic, grapes are hand-harvested and fully destemmed, fermentation begins with cold maceration to lock in freshness and fruit purity, and the wines age slowly on fine lees before bottling without filtration. There is no heavy oak, no manipulation, no shortcuts — just an unwavering focus on letting each vineyard speak as clearly as possible.

What makes the domaine particularly compelling for wine lovers is its range. From the village Marsannay Rouge — an ideal entry point into Burgundy at a fraction of Grand Cru prices — to the single-vineyard Marsannay lieux-dits like Les Longeroies, La Montagne, Le Chapitre, and Clos du Roy, through to wines from Pernand-Vergelesses and Aloxe-Corton, Yann has assembled a portfolio that rewards exploration at every level. The wines already appear on the lists of The French Laundry, Quince, Singlethread, Tour d’Argent, and Frenchie — a remarkable achievement for a domaine barely a decade old. Production remains small and demand continues to grow.
