Description

The wine

Marsannay sits at the very northern tip of the Côte de Nuits and remains one of the best-kept secrets in Burgundy for anyone seeking village-level quality at a fraction of the price of Gevrey-Chambertin or Vosne-Romanée. It is also the only Burgundy appellation that makes wine in all three colors. This village rouge is the natural introduction to what Charlopin-Tissier does.

Yann Charlopin and Justine Tissier founded the domaine in 2013, starting in Marsannay with vineyards from Justine’s family. Yann trained with Jean-Marie Fourrier, and his father Philippe studied under Henri Jayer.

The grapes come from selected parcels on the Marsannay slopes, on clay-limestone soil with a high proportion of limestone and stones. The farming is organic and the harvest is by hand. The grapes are fully destemmed and cold-macerated before fermentation with native yeasts, a process designed to preserve freshness. The wine ages slowly on fine lees, about 16 months in Burgundy barrels with a moderate proportion of new oak, and is bottled without filtration.

A Marsannay that tastes like Marsannay, at a village price that’s hard to find in the Côte de Nuits. For the single vineyards, see La Montagne and Le Chapitre.

2023 vintage note

2023 was a warm year across the Côte de Nuits with a large crop. Growers who thinned their vines made reds with supple tannins and freshness despite the heat. Picking began in early September, under a heatwave, and most fruit was in before the end of the month. For a village Marsannay, it makes an approachable bottle.

Yann Charlopin founded Domaine Charlopin-Tissier in 2013 — son of Philippe Charlopin, mentored by Jean-Marie Fourrier. Organic farming, fully destemmed, cold maceration, no filtration. The wines appear on the lists of The French Laundry, Quince, SingleThread, and Les 110 de Taillevent in Paris.
