Description

The Wine

Gevrey-Chambertin is one of the great villages of the Côte de Nuits, with more Grand Crus than any other village in Burgundy. It is also where Charlopin-Tissier now has its winery.

This Vieilles Vignes comes from two plots of vines more than 85 years old. Les Marchais is an east-facing vineyard across from Clos Saint-Jacques. En Vosne sits to the right of the route des Grands Crus, east of En Champs. The soil in both is clay and limestone. We have very little of it.

Yann Charlopin and Justine Tissier founded the domaine in 2013, beginning in Marsannay, and farm just over four hectares across the Côte de Nuits. Yann trained with Jean-Marie Fourrier, and his father Philippe studied under Henri Jayer.

The farming is organic. The grapes are fully destemmed and given a cold maceration, then fermented without intervention, with native yeasts. The wine ages in Burgundy barrels, with about half of them new.

For the same winemaking style at a lower price, taste it alongside the Marsannay and Aloxe-Corton.

2023 vintage note

2023 was a warm year across the Côte de Nuits with a large crop. Growers who thinned their vines made reds with supple tannins and freshness despite the heat. Picking began in early September, under a heatwave, and most fruit was in before the end of the month. Very old vines are naturally low-yielding, which helps in a year with a large crop.

Yann Charlopin founded Domaine Charlopin-Tissier in 2013 — son of Philippe Charlopin, mentored by Jean-Marie Fourrier. Organic farming, fully destemmed, cold maceration, no filtration. The wines appear on the lists of The French Laundry, Quince, SingleThread, and Les 110 de Taillevent in Paris.
