In April, Eric Asimov featured Le Grappin in The New York Times — calling the Hautes Côtes de Beaune Rouge ‘Aux Grandes Raies’ “a fresh, juicy red” that will develop greater complexity with age. We’ve been importing Andrew and Emma Nielsen’s wines since their first vintage in 2011 and it’s good to see the word getting out.
Andrew and Emma work from a cellar in the Hautes Côtes de Beaune, sourcing from the same organically farmed parcels every year — adding new plots only when a site genuinely moves them. Small lots. Everything made and bottled by hand. The labels are commissioned from Louise Despont, a Brooklyn artist who draws intricate geometric compositions on antique ledger paper using a compass. Every label applied to every bottle by hand.
The wines — Le Grappin
Four new wines arrived this season alongside returning favourites from previous vintages.
2023 Hautes Côtes de Beaune Rouge ‘Aux Grandes Raies’
The wine Eric Asimov featured. 40-year-old Pinot Noir in a limestone marl studded with fossils — the same fossils visible in the soil photograph below. Hand-harvested, whole cluster, native fermentation in concrete, 12 months in a large oak vat. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. 15 barrels made.
2023 Beaune Premier Cru ‘Les Grèves’ Blanc
Less than 1% of Les Grèves — one of Beaune’s most celebrated Premier Crus — is planted to Chardonnay. Only five producers make a white version. Le Grappin is one of them. 50-year-old vines, 14 months on full lees, unfined. One of the most distinctive wines we carry.
2022 Beaune Premier Cru ‘Boucherottes’ Rouge
Two parcels below Clos des Mouches, next to Pommard’s Les Épenots. 13 barrels made. Whole cluster, native fermentation, unfined and unfiltered. *”The red Beaune Boucherottes is quiet with apple-blossom high tones, roasted spice and pretty cherry fruit.”* — Jon Bonné, The New French Wine.
2022 Savigny-lès-Beaune Rouge ‘Aux Fournaux’
60-year-old Pinot Noir at the junction of Pernand-Vergelesses and Aloxe-Corton. Three-appellation complexity at a village price. Hand-sorted, whole cluster, unfined.
The wines — Du Grappin
Du Grappin is Andrew and Emma’s more accessible range — what they call vins de soif, made to be delicious, refreshing, and drunk without ceremony. The same organically farmed growers, the same care in the cellar, at friendlier prices.
2024 Bourgogne Aligoté
“This Aligoté demonstrates how pleasing and refreshing the grape can be. You could drink it while eating a bowl of chips, but it would also go beautifully with shellfish or cheeses.”* — Eric Asimov, The New York Times. Old-vine Aligoté Doré from a south-facing site in Pierreclos. 80-year-old vines, Bathonian limestone-marl soil, aged in old oak and concrete.
2022 Vézelay Blanc
35-year-old Chardonnay from the vineyard of Merlutte — Kimmeridgian limestone, the same ancient seabed that runs beneath some of Burgundy’s most celebrated white wine appellations. One-third fermented in a large oak foudre, two-thirds in a concrete egg. 12 months on full lees. The by-the-glass white we never stop recommending.
2024 Mâcon-Villages
100% Chardonnay from a steep, cool-sited vineyard on the limestone slopes above Azé. Vines 30 to 80 years old. Native fermentation in large format barrels, 12 months on lees.
2023 Côte de Brouilly
Old bush-vine Gamay from the southwest slope of Mount Brouilly — decomposed granite and diorite over deep granite bedrock. Three weeks of carbonic maceration, seven months in neutral oak. Unfined and unfiltered.
The label
Every bottle carries a label commissioned from Louise Despont — a Brooklyn artist whose intricate geometric drawings on antique ledger paper have been exhibited at The Drawing Center in New York, Pioneer Works in Brooklyn, and the Petit Palais in Paris. Andrew chose her work for the first Le Grappin vintage in 2011.
*”They are a link between the new and the old worlds.”* — Andrew Nielsen
Every label applied by hand.
