Domaine Charlopin-Tissier · 2023 Bourgogne Rouge ‘Montre Cul’

$62.00

Bourgogne Rouge from a lieu-dit in Marsannay, which is to say, Marsannay fruit at a Bourgogne price. The name translates as “show your backside”: officially a reference to the steep slope that required workers to bend forward to tend the vines. Unofficially, a message to the Dijonnais. Organic, fully destemmed, cold maceration, no filtration.

Description

The wine

Montre Cul is a lieu-dit in Marsannay, a specific named plot within the village whose grapes, under the French appellation rules, produce Bourgogne Rouge rather than Marsannay village wine. The classification difference is administrative, not terroir-based.

The name translates literally as “show your backside.” The steep slope required workers to bend forward so far to tend the vines that passing observers got an eyeful. Or so the official story goes. Ask a Côte de Nuits vigneron about the Dijonnais and you may get a different explanation.

Marsannay is where Charlopin-Tissier began, on vineyards from Justine Tissier’s family. Yann Charlopin handles this wine with the same approach he applies across the whole range: organic farming, hand harvest, fully destemmed, cold maceration before fermentation with native yeasts, slow ageing on fine lees, no filtration. No shortcuts at the Bourgogne level.

2023 vintage note

2023 was a warm year across the Côte de Nuits with a large crop. Growers who thinned their vines made reds with supple tannins and freshness despite the heat. Picking began in early September, under a heatwave, and most fruit was in before the end of the month. For a Marsannay lieu-dit at the Bourgogne level, it makes an approachable bottle.
