Domaine Charlopin-Tissier · 2022 Bourgogne Rouge ‘Montre Cul’

$60.00

Bourgogne Rouge from a lieu-dit in Marsannay — which is to say, Marsannay fruit at a Bourgogne price. The name translates as “show your backside” — officially a reference to the steep slope that required workers to bend forward to tend the vines. Unofficially, a message to the Dijonnais. Organic, fully destemmed, cold maceration, no filtration.

Description

The wine

Montre Cul is a lieu-dit in Marsannay — a specific named plot within the village whose grapes, under the French appellation rules, produce Bourgogne Rouge rather than Marsannay village wine. The classification difference is administrative rather than terroir-based. The vines grow in the same Marsannay soils that produce some of the most celebrated Pinot Noir in Burgundy.

The name is worth explaining. *Montre Cul* translates literally as “show your backside” — the steep slope required workers to bend forward so dramatically to tend the vines that passing observers got an eyeful. Or so the official story goes. Ask a Côte de Nuits vigneron about the Dijonnais and you may get a different explanation.

Yann Charlopin handles the wine with the same approach he applies across the entire range: organic farming, hand-harvested, fully destemmed, cold maceration before fermentation with native yeasts, slow ageing on fine lees, no filtration. No shortcuts regardless of the appellation level.

The result is a Bourgogne Rouge that tastes like it comes from somewhere specific — because it does. Bright, precise Marsannay fruit at an entry-level price. The natural starting point into the Charlopin-Tissier range.

2022 vintage note

2022 was a warm, generous vintage across the Côte de Nuits — excellent growing conditions producing Pinot Noir of exceptional fruit clarity and smooth tannin structure. For a Marsannay lieu-dit at the Bourgogne level, the vintage adds weight and richness that makes this an immediately approachable bottle. Drink now through 2028.

Tasting notes

Bright ruby. Red cherry, raspberry, a hint of violet and fresh earth — the aromatic clarity of Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir at its most direct. The palate is precise and light on its feet with fine-grained tannins and a clean, refreshing finish. The cold maceration preserves fruit purity without adding extraction. Drink now through 2028.

Service: 16°C. Charcuterie, roast chicken, mushroom dishes, soft cheeses.
