Description

The wine

Avenay-Val-d’Or sits just south of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ — a Premier Cru village in the Grande Vallée de la Marne where the domaine has its deepest roots. Antoine’s great-grandmother Gaëtane had her first vines here. The village has been part of the Bouvet family story since before Antoine was born.

The Avenay Val d’Or Blanc de Blancs comes from a single lieu-dit — Les Plantels — where old Chardonnay vines grow in the chalky soils that give the Grande Vallée de la Marne its mineral character. This is the only white grape wine Antoine makes — everything else in the range is Pinot Noir dominant. A Blanc de Blancs from this producer, on this terroir, aged in this way, is something genuinely unusual.

Antoine’s approach in the cellar is the same as across the entire range: spontaneous fermentation in used barriques, no additions, no fining, no filtration. The wine then ages on its lees for a minimum of 30 months before manual disgorgement. Zero dosage — no added sugar at any stage. The chalky soils and the extended lees ageing give the wine a mineral tension and a textural depth that most Blanc de Blancs at this price don’t achieve.

The result is a Champagne of real precision — flint, candied citrus, chalky mineral notes on the nose, a tense and luminous palate with the weight that comes from old oak and long lees contact. The most site-specific wine in the Bouvet range.
