Description
The wine
The Saignée de Mareuil is the vintage counterpart to the Saignée de Bisseuil — where the Bisseuil comes from a single plot in the middle village, this wine comes from two plots in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ itself, the village at the heart of the domaine. Faussard and Les Béguines — both planted in 1968, both 100% Pinot Noir, both on the chalky limestone soils that give Mareuil-sur-Aÿ its mineral, structured character.
The saignée method — bleeding juice from the red grapes early in maceration — gives the wine its colour and its texture. The skin contact produces a rosé with genuine grip and depth rather than the pale, delicate style that blended rosé Champagnes typically achieve. This is a wine made for the table.
What makes this cuvée exceptional is the time. Bottled in June 2020, disgorged in May 2026 — six years on lees in old oak barrels before release. Most non-vintage Champagnes age for fifteen to eighteen months. Six years produces a depth of flavour, a toasty complexity, and a textural richness that shorter ageing cannot achieve. The zero dosage with natural residual sugar — a characteristic of the 2019 vintage and the specific fermentation rather than an addition — gives the wine a roundness and generosity that pure zero dosage sometimes lacks.
2019 was one of the warmest growing seasons in recent Champagne memory — producing Pinot Noir of exceptional concentration and natural richness. From 58-year-old vines on chalk, in a warm year, aged six years on lees in old oak — this is among the most serious wines in the December shipment.
One of three cuvées arriving in December 2026 that have never before been offered in the US.
